Under the header "further application modules", we offer solutions for simplifying the operation of a WDM network. Solutions that are not absolutely necessary for the functionality of pure data transmission, but whose use can massively simplify life in a WDM environment.
Dynamic Gain Equalizer
The Dynamic Gain Equalizer (DGE) module is a powerful, digitally controlled equalizer with variable enhancement. The module equalizes per channel power, optimizing the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) for greater range. Both 40 and 80 channel configurations are supported by the MICROSENS equalizer, implementation is simple and efficient. The MICROSENS DGE is designed for a variety of configurations and, in conjunction with the MICROSENS Optical Power Monitor, provides automatic power equalization. This is critical for mesh or metro applications. Dynamic power adjustment per channel is available on MICROSENS ROADM cards; the MICROSENS DGE complements ROADM cards for terminal locations to enable automatic end-to-end channel optimization and OSNR margin improvement. This product is available for both the 100GHz Grid and the 50GHz Grid.
Optical Power Monitoring Module
Optical power monitoring is a powerful tool for obtaining an overview of the network-wide status of signal strength and availability of the respective wavelengths. It improves overall network operation and provides end-to-end network optimization.
The MICROSENS OPM is a device that provides up to eight spectrum inputs for optical performance monitoring over the C-band. The device consists of an optical switch to select the input port to be monitored. The selected port or its wavelength is then monitored by this component. The module monitors the operating state of each channel and the aggregated DWDM signal to provide information on optical performance, channel availability/non-availability, and channel mismatch due to out-of-service channels. It can also compensate for the insertion loss of channel-based monitoring ports.
Variable Attenuation Module
In an effort to reduce the cost of deploying and operating networks and increase profitability, operators are trying to automate as many of the operational aspects as possible. The MICROSENS module provides network automation capabilities for managing optical performance by enabling NOC-controlled remote adjustment of performance levels to compensate for changes due to fiber changes and other events such as the insertion of new channels. In this way, operators can not only balance but also optimize the power levels. The difference is that an optimized system is balanced and implemented with correct power levels for distances, losses and receiver tolerances not only for all current channels but also for future traffic. The MICROSENS variable channel attenuation module is designed for use in low channel count applications where broadband gain equalizer solutions are too expensive. It eliminates the need for fixed attenuators by dynamically adjusting the power per channel to optimize performance, provide a better optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), and provide additional scope for the system.
