Gearing up for the Future with PoE+: New 6-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch by MICROSENS

The new Gigabit Ethernet desktop switches offered by Microsens provide maximum flexibility for companies and government agencies: Compact and reliable, the switches feature five standardised RJ-45 twisted pair connectors 10/100/1000Base-T as well as a variable SFP uplink port with 100/1000Base-X. PoE+ functionality integrated in four ports even supports the operation of high-consumption terminal devices. And yet, the switches boast an impressively compact design and silent operation.

Future-Proof, Economic, and Silent

More and more often, users take advantage of the benefits offered by Power-over-Ethernet, powering their terminal devices directly through their Ethernet data connections. To allow the connection of yet more powerful terminal devices such as access points, IP cameras or thin clients in the future, the Microsens switches support the PoE+ standard IEEE 802.3at. This standard guarantees a maximum power rating of 30 Watt per copper port. The power requirements of connected terminal devices are furthermore monitored by an intelligent power management system. As desktop switches are generally operated within the users' direct vicinity, developers designed the systems to get by without a fan. Overall, Microsens placed great emphasis on functionality and reliability, without neglecting energy efficiency: All switches comply with the Energy Efficient Ethernet Standard. At the same time, a new hardware basis allows the use of optimised chip sets, which save up to 30 percent of energy costs compared to their predecessors. The Gigabit desktop switches were developed and are being manufactured in Germany.

Fast Configuration

The desktop switches provide an integrated network management system and support all current security-relevant management and security protocols such as SNMPv3/SSH/https. Alternatively, they can also be configured and monitored through the optional Microsens Network Management Platform (NMP). This platform was specifically designed for the administration of all Microsens components and allows high system availability, fast response times, and optimised work processes.

All the configuration data for the switches are stored on a microSD memory card, which is protected against unauthorised access. Consequently, to replace a device you merely need to exchange the memory card - and all settings including IP and MAC addresses are transferred automatically. Another way in which the Microsens switches of the next generation guarantee security of investment is through Dual IP stack implementation, which affords a smooth migration towards IPv6 addressing.

Integrated Power Supply

All Gigabit desktop switches feature a high-quality metal casing and are extremely robust. An integrated power supply allows them to be connected directly through a rubber connector with 230 V AC. The switches can also be mounted on the wall to save space. The mounting equipment required for this is included in the delivery.

In addition to the PoE+ version, the new Gigabit switches are also available in a cost-efficient PoE version based on IEEE 802.3af.

Aside from the new desktop switches, Microsens offers an extensive portfolio of switches designed for professional installation in floor boxes or in cable ducts. The specialist for fiber optic transmission systems developed the "Fiber To The Office" concept (FTTO) to combine the benefits of powerful optical fiber technology with the flexibility of copper-based twisted pair cabling.

About MICROSENS

Transmitting information via fiber optic connections offers numerous benefits. MICROSENS GmbH & Co. KG recognised this very early on. As one of the pioneers, the company has developed and produced high-performance communications and transmission systems in Germany since 1993. Individually matched to the demands of diverse usage areas and embedded in comprehensive concepts for individual sectors. But, above all, close to the customer. Technical challenges from customer projects are incorporated directly into product development. This way, IP-based automation solutions are created for modern buildings, cost-efficient network concepts for the office and workspace, robust and fail-safe solutions for industrial environments, optical transport systems future-oriented wide area networks and efficient coupling of sites and computer centres.
